Methodology

Data sources and methodology: where the data comes from and how we work with it

The Slovak company database is built from public registers, chamber directories, business directories and the details companies publish themselves. Here we describe what we take from which source, how we link contacts to an IČO and where the limits are.

Database status: 3 November 2026 · Page updated: 3 November 2026

Sources for Slovakia

As of 3 November 2026 the database holds 2,415,912 entities, 1,257,168 of them active. It draws on these public sources: the Register of Legal Entities (RPO), lists of the Financial Administration (tax ID, VAT ID, tax reliability index), the register of financial statements via Ekosystém Slovensko.Digital, business directories (zlatestranky.sk, zoznam.sk, azet.sk), Overture Maps and OpenStreetMap map data, lists of professional chambers and authorities, lists of healthcare providers, sector portals and company websites. Record counts by source are on the database status page.

  • Register of Legal Entities (RPO)

The identity of entities from the register: IČO, business name, address, legal form, main SK NACE activity code and dates of incorporation and dissolution. The RPO takes over data from the commercial, trade and other registers. The register is governed by Act No. 272/2015 Coll.; its open data is available as bulk files under the CC BY 4.0 licence. The register contains no contact details.

    rpo.statistics.sk

  • Slovak Financial Administration

Published lists of taxpayers and VAT payers and the tax reliability index: tax ID, VAT ID and the tax reliability rating. We do not use lists whose licence prohibits commercial use.

  • Ekosystém Slovensko.Digital

Processed open company data, including size categories from the register of financial statements; we comply with the provider’s terms.

  • Professional chambers and authorities

Public lists, for example of lawyers, architects, civil engineers, hauliers or healthcare providers. Contacts on them are published for professional purposes; for individuals the GDPR obligations apply.

  • Business directories

The zlatestranky.sk, zoznam.sk and azet.sk (so far as a pilot) directories and sector portals such as podnikam.sk, where companies publish their contacts. We store the source address for every contact. Directories may be protected by the database maker’s right, so we keep their data separate from register data.

  • Overture Maps and OpenStreetMap

Open map data with premises, names and contacts (Overture under the CDLA Permissive 2.0 licence, OpenStreetMap under the ODbL). We link a contact to an IČO only via a verified website or a matching name and address; premises that cannot be linked to an IČO are kept as separate businesses without an RPO record.

  • Company websites

Phone numbers, email addresses and websites that companies publish together with their identification details; under § 4(1) of Act No. 22/2004 Coll., an information society service provider must state, among other things, its business name, registered office, email, phone and register entry. We process company websites so far as a pilot.

How we count the figures

The figures on this website are measured directly in the production database as of 3 November 2026, without rounding:

  1. Entities = all records in the database, including dissolved ones (2,415,912).
  2. Active = without a dissolution date and without the status dissolved, cancelled, deleted, in liquidation or terminated: 1,008,131 entities with the status active in the RPO and 249,037 businesses from directories and maps without an RPO record, 1,257,168 in total.
  3. With a contact = an active entity with at least one phone number, website or own email address (336,632); 381,414 for all entities including dissolved ones.
  4. Own email = an address not shared by three or more businesses; of 200,095 distinct addresses we exclude 4,456 this way.
  5. Region = by registered address; 24,074 entities have no region assigned.

Tables by status, region and source are on the database status page.

Market figures and their sources

Alongside our own figures we show market size according to official statistics. Slovakia: Eurostat, structural business statistics (sbs_ovw_act), businesses in industry, construction and market services in 2024: 682,029 (NACE sections B to S excluding O and S94, reference year 2024, data as of 30 September 2026); the same source provides the figures by industry. EU: EU-27 33,978,235, of which 33,296,206 in the 26 other member states. Municipalities: Eurostat, local administrative units (LAU) 2024. The Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic supplies the Slovak data to Eurostat under the common EU methodology. Official statistics count enterprises, not register entries, and cannot be compared directly with the number of RPO entries or with our dataset. We were unable to open the Statistical Office’s own website (DATAcube) on 25 October 2026, so we cite Eurostat.

How a record is created

This is how a record of the Slovak company database is created. Data from other countries is compiled for each request (EU and other markets).

  1. Identity from the register. The RPO provides one record per IČO; if an IČO has several active entries, we merge them. Businesses from directories and maps that cannot be matched to an RPO entry are kept as separate records without a register status.
  2. Published contacts. From company websites, chamber directories, business directories and map data we take phone numbers, email addresses and websites together with the source address and date.
  3. Matching. We link a contact to a record only when characteristics match: strongest is the IČO stated on the website, followed by business name and registered address. For Czech IČO numbers on Slovak websites (same check digit algorithm) we also require a matching name.
  4. Shared addresses. Email addresses that recur for three or more companies (for example accounting firms or hosting providers) are not supplied.
  5. Format check. Phone numbers are converted to a uniform format and email addresses checked for formal validity.

Matching is automated and cannot be error-free. For identical or very similar names without an IČO on the website, the risk of a wrong match is higher.

Legal framework for use

  • Email to published business contacts. Under § 116(15) of Act No. 452/2021 Coll. on electronic communications, prior consent is not required for direct marketing addressed to the published contact details of a sole trader or a legal entity. The message must identify the sender and their address and offer a simple, free opt-out. That is why we state the publication source of every email address. The Electronic Commerce Act (§ 4(6) of Act No. 22/2004 Coll.) contains its own rule on unsolicited commercial communications; for large campaigns we recommend a review by a lawyer.
  • Phone. Direct marketing calls are prohibited to numbers on the list kept by the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications and Postal Services and to anyone who has objected to such calls (§ 116(8)). Automated calling systems require consent (§ 116(3)).
  • Personal data. Data about sole traders and named individuals is personal data. We process it on the basis of legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR); the information under Art. 14 GDPR is on the information for data subjects page, and the right to object under Art. 21 GDPR can be exercised using the objection form. The supervisory authority is the Office for Personal Data Protection of the Slovak Republic.
  • The buyer’s own responsibility. Anyone who buys data from us is a controller under the GDPR for their own use and needs their own legal basis. We do not provide legal advice.

Known limitations

  • The database is still being completed. Assignment to industries is still in progress and company websites are processed as a pilot; every quotation states how many records we can supply.
  • Businesses without an RPO record. 249,037 active businesses from directories and maps have not yet been matched to the register; their IČO and legal form are not verified against the RPO.
  • Contacts go out of date. Companies change phone numbers, email addresses and websites; time passes between a change and the update of the source.
  • No deliverability check. The number of email addresses is not a number of verified mailboxes, and a phone number does not confirm that the line is answered.
  • General addresses. Addresses such as info@ or kontakt@ are not personal contacts of decision-makers.
  • Uneven coverage. Industries with widespread websites have far more contacts than industries where businesses are rarely online.
  • Region by registered office. Region and district follow the registered address, not the area of operation or individual premises.

Industry registers: for checking, not as address lists

Many industries have official lists, such as the register of financial agents, chamber directories or the register of hauliers. They are for checking whether a particular company is authorised and are not contact lists for marketing. What exists in each industry is described on the industry pages:

More about the registers: Slovak business registers: what is public and SK NACE industry codes. On outreach rules: B2B outreach and § 116.

Report an error

If you find incorrect data in your own record, write to us and we will correct it.

Data in public registers is kept by the relevant register. We correct our record; a permanent correction also requires a change in the register.
