In brief

  • SK NACE classifies businesses by main activity into sections, divisions, groups and classes.
  • In statistics a company has one main activity; it may have dozens of business objects in the register.
  • Since 2026 the Register of Legal Entities records codes under SK NACE Rev. 2.1; statistics for earlier years use Rev. 2.
  • A code is a starting point for selection, not proof of what a company does.

When you order a company list “by industry”, there is almost always an SK NACE code behind it, the Slovak statistical classification of economic activities. It pays to know how it is built and where its limits are.

How SK NACE is structured

SK NACE is the Slovak version of the European NACE classification. It has five levels: section (a letter, for example F construction), division (two digits, 43 specialised construction activities), group (three digits, 43.2), class (four digits, 43.22) and, at national level, subclass. The first four levels are the same across the EU, so code 43.22 means the same in Slovakia as in Austria.

You can scroll the table sideways.

One main activity

In statistics a company always has one main activity. A heating installer who also does electrical work is classified under 43.22, not also under 43.21. A selection by code therefore gives you businesses with that main activity, not all those offering the service.

The business objects in the commercial or trade register are something else. A company may register dozens of them “just in case” and never carry out most of them. For selecting a target group they are less useful than the main activity.

What has no code

  • Tradespeople: the classification knows electrical installation and roofing, not “trades” as a whole.
  • An online shop alongside a store: class 47.91 applies only when internet sales are the main activity.
  • Opticians: in SK NACE Rev. 2 they are part of the broader class 47.78.
  • Size and technology: a code says nothing about headcount or the machines a company uses.

The NACE 2.1 revision

The European Union adopted the NACE Rev. 2.1 revision as Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2023/137. It has 651 classes, 36 more than NACE Rev. 2, and statistics must use it for reference year 2025 onwards. Some activities have moved to new divisions and several sections have been relettered.

In practice this means two sets of codes at once. In its open data of October 2026, the Register of Legal Entities records codes under SK NACE Rev. 2.1, while official statistics for years up to 2024 use Rev. 2. Our industry pages therefore show Rev. 2 codes (the official figures relate to them), while the export contains the code as recorded in the register.

How to use codes for selection

  1. Describe in words the activity you are looking for and find the matching class or group.
  2. Write down what does not belong in the selection (for example developers when selecting construction firms).
  3. Decide whether you want the main activity only, or also businesses offering the service alongside another activity; the latter requires a website.
  4. For important segments, check a few records on the company website before the campaign.

How our industries are defined is shown in the company database by industry overview; what is public in the registers is explained in Slovak business registers.

Frequently asked questions

Can a company have more than one SK NACE code?

In statistics a company has one main activity, by which it is classified. It may carry out secondary activities, but a selection by code only captures it under the main activity. The business objects in the commercial or trade register are a different matter and there can be dozens of them.

What is the difference between SK NACE Rev. 2 and Rev. 2.1?

Revision 2.1 is based on the European NACE Rev. 2.1 introduced by Delegated Regulation (EU) 2023/137. It has more classes, moves some activities (for example in information and communication) and changes the lettering of sections. Statistics for years up to 2024 use Rev. 2; the Register of Legal Entities already records codes under Rev. 2.1.

Is the SK NACE code reliable for selecting customers?

It is a good starting point, not proof. The code is register data and may not match what the company does today. For important segments, check the actual activity on the company website.
